Portland Parking Guide

About Portland
Portland is a city located in the U.S. state of Oregon. Portland is Oregon's most populous city, and the third most populous city in the Pacific Northwest region, after Seattle, Washington and Vancouver, British Columbia. Portland has a climate marked by both warm, dry summers and wet, cool-to-chilly winter days. This climate is ideal for growing roses. For more than a century, Portland has been known as the "City of Roses", with many rose gardens - most prominently the International Rose Test Garden.

The city is also known for its large number of microbreweries and micro-distilleries. Portland's location is beneficial for several industries. Relatively low energy cost, accessible resources, North-South and East-West Interstates, international air terminals, large marine shipping facilities, and both west coast intercontinental railroads are all economic advantages.

Parking in Portland
The Parking division manages on and off street parking to support the safety and parking needs of residents, visitors, businesses and other departments.

Metered Parking
Presently, Portland is using two types of meters - the Single-Space and the SmartMeter (paystation) to monitor approximately 9,700 spaces. Single-space meters accept nickels, dimes, and quarters. SmartMeters accept nickels, dimes, quarters, the small dollar coin, and credit/debit cards as payment.

Downtown parking meters operate from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, unless otherwise posted. The current rate for on-street parking in the Downtown district is $1.60 per hour. To report broken meters call 503-823-7200.

Portland has been charging for on-street parking on Sundays since 2009. Because downtown on-street parking was so difficult to find when parking was free on Sundays, the business community supported charging for parking 1-7 p.m. on Sundays to create more turnover and increase the availability of parking for their customers. Since summer 2009, parking has been free at meters only on the nine actual holidays listed on each meter.

Off Street Parking
The City of Portland owns 4 parking garages, two of which the City directly operates in the downtown providing short-term parking for employees and customers of local business establishments. Numerous privately owned parking lots and garages offers a multitude of parking opportunities while visiting the City.

There are a plenty of garage parking options available in and around the downtown area. One may choose to park in a garage if the parking requirement is for more than just an hour or two. Parking Garages are highly suitable for both short and long term parking requirements.
Best Parking helps you choose the best suitable parking facility for off street parking via an interactive map. Most garages are suitable options for economical long term parking.
